Mike Akel
Mike Akel is an award winning filmmaker and educator with a passion for storytelling and a knack for engaging audiences of all ages. His journey began as an independent filmmaker, where he garnered recognition for his feature films Chalk (2006), An Ordinary Family (2011), The Tiny Life of Butcher Duke (2021), and Churchville, the TV comedy series (2025). His talent and dedication have earned him multiple festival awards including a nomination for the prestigious John Cassavetes Award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Mike's diverse skillset extends to the TV world, where he previously held the position of field producer for TLC's "My 600LB Life", season 2. His talents are currently showcased as a staff writer and director on the Emmy Award Winning TV series, Reconnecting Roots that airs Nationwide on PBS.
Mike is also the proud co-founder of Star Light Kids, an original kids content company that has amassed more than 2.4 million YouTube subscribers.
His passion for education led him to share his expertise as a film lecturer at the University of Texas in Austin and is currently the Film Instructor at Renaissance High School in Franklin, Tennessee.
